OVID - From Vesta's Day: Account of her Temple and Ceremonial from Fasti, Book VI. 11.51-6. (translated by J. C. H.)
I was totally absorbed in prayer. I perceived the heavenly godhead and the joyful ground shone with purple light. I did not see you myself, O Goddess (farewell to the lies of the poets!) nor were you to be seen by man, but the things that I did not know and of which I was held in error were made known to me without anyone teaching.
