The Lars of Etruria in Italy were regarded, like the Grecian heroes, as being the spirits of men, who, after death, still hovered about their former abodes, averting dangers from, and bestowing blessings on, the inhabitants. They differed from the Penates, who were, properly speaking, gods, being of a higher nature or personifications of natural powers, the givers of abundance and wealth.
