Sir James Jeans – The Mysterious Universe

A still more drastic possibility, again arising out of a suggestion made by Bohr [Niels Bohr], is that the minutest phenomena of nature do not admit of representation in the space-time framework at all.  On this view the four dimensional continuum of the theory of relativity is adequate only for some of the phenomena of nature, these include large scale phenomena and radiation in free space; other phenomena can only be represented by going outside the continuum.

We have for example, already tentatively pictured consciousness as something outside the continuum………. It is conceivable that happenings entirely outside the continuum determine what we describe as the course of events inside the continuum………..
