I remember quite well when I was living in New York during the war as a refugee, I had dinner once with the great French composer Darius Milhaud. I asked him, 'When did you realise that you were going to be a composer?' He explained to me that, when he was a child in bed slowly falling to sleep, he was listening and hearing a kind of music with no relationship whatsoever to the kind of music he knew. He discovered later that this was already his own music
