Background
A description of the experience
Cidofovir (brand name Vistide) is an injectable antiviral medication primarily used as a treatment for cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis (an infection of the retina of the eye) in people with AIDS.
Cidofovir was approved for medical use in 1996.
It suppresses CMV replication by selective inhibition of viral DNA polymerase and therefore prevention of viral replication and transcription.
“It is an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate, and is therefore independent of phosphorylation by viral enzymes, unlike acyclovir. Maintenance therapy with cidofovir involves an infusion only once every two weeks, making it a convenient treatment option. Because dosing is relatively infrequent, a permanent catheter is not necessary for infusions”.
The major side effect of cidofovir is that it can be nephrotoxic.
Nephrotoxicity (from Greek: nephros, "kidney") is a poisonous effect of some substances, both toxic chemicals and medication, on the kidneys. There are various forms of toxicity. The nephrotoxic effect of most drugs is more profound in patients already suffering from renal impairment. Some drugs may affect renal function in more than one way.
And I suspect that this is the route by which the hallucination was achieved.
On Jan, 31, 2017 336 people reported to have side effects when taking Cidofovir. Among them, 3 people (0.89%) have Hallucination
