Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
This case is frequently repeated in numerous books until one wonders how much it has been altered and embellished as it passed from writer to writer.
I think Lyall Watson got the story from Sylvan Muldoon and Henry Carrington's book - The Phenomenon of astral projection, but where they got the story from is unknown to me.
I put it on the site simply because it is so oft repeated.
Although I have put out of body, no out of body experiencers I have come across can communicate with anyone, they are in a different 'layer' away fom human communication, so he may have used out of body to get there but of course, everyone jumps up and down in excitement and says he 'apported' himself!' But there are other explanations, inter composer communication and hallucination being the most obvious.
Most scientists will say it is all made up anyway - a religious invention done to impress the superstitious populace and indeed that too is a possibility.
A description of the experience
The Romeo Error – Lyall Watson
On the morning of 21st September 1774, Alfonso de Liguori was preparing himself for the celebration of Mass in prison at Arezzo, when he fell into a deep sleep.
Two hours later he recovered and announced that he had just returned from Rome where he had seen Pope Clement XIV die. At first this was attributed to a dream and then, four days later when the news of the Pope's death arrived, to coincidence.
Then it was discovered that all those in attendance at the bedside of the dying pontiff had not only seen but talked to Alfonso, who had led them in prayers for the dying.
The Mystery of the Human Double – Ralph Shirley
A case is recorded, dated September 17th, 1774, of Alphonse de Lignori, who, when imprisoned at Arezzo, remained five days in his cell without taking any nourishment. At the end of his fast he awoke one morning and stated that he had been present at the death-bed of Pope Clement XIV. His statement was subsequently confirmed, and it was alleged that he was seen in attendance by the bedside of the dying Pope.
