CASE 3-The Gas-Company Worker

To protect this man's family, I am omitting the names and addresses in the following case which was -translated from the files of the Parapsychology Institute.

Mr. X., a civil servant in the Municipal Gas Works in the Dutch town of A., failed to return home one day after work in late 1947. His sudden disappearance mystified his wife and children. Police could throw no light upon his whereabouts.

Several days later, one of the missing man's friends visited Gerard Croiset who was then living in Enschede. He brought the gas-company worker's cap as an inductor. Cautiously, the visitor volunteered no names or details, but merely remarked vaguely that "this case is about a loss."

After touching the cap with his long, sensitive fingers, Croiset declared, "I see the man who wears this cap is in a highly nervous state of mind. I get the impression that he has something to do with coal. Has this man been stealing?  I have a strong feeling that he has been involved in some swindling. I see him jumping on a bicycle. He is wearing his work trousers and a blue jacket. He is riding toward the town of B. along a road with white piles. On his left, I see pine woods. He has stopped there."

Croiset the Clairvoyant then shook his head sadly, saying, "I'm sorry, but this man is no longer alive. I see clearly that he has hanged himself from a tree."

The next day .the missing man's friend reported Croiset's information to the police. Two days later, police found the dead body of Mr. X. hanging from a tree in the precise area where Croiset had indicated. And he was wearing work trousers and a blue jacket.

"The autopsy proved that the man was dead at the time of the consultation in Croiset's home," Professor Tenhaeff's report of the case later showed.

Police investigation revealed that the missing gas-company worker had been guilty of fraudulent dealings in his office.

When he realized that his thievery was on the verge of being discovered, he committed suicide.
