Background
The picture shares a number of similar symbolic devices with those in the Gentling of the Bull, also on this site.
Theosebeia 'reclines on a bed of gold'. In front of her is a man fanning her with a fan.
Zosimos stands in front of her and with him there is a man with two wings and a bull on his head which has a rope round its neck, which Zosimos is holding in his hand.
Wings, threads, ropes and ladders are all symbolic but different devices for ascent, so we may have a number of altenative meanings here.
