A description of the experience

The Art of Dying – Dr Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick

Judy Gaskell describes how, on the night of her mother's death, her mother was staying in Judy's sister's house with some of her grandchildren and son-in-law

In the middle of the night, Alice, her favourite granddaughter, was awakened by a figure standing at the end of her bed. It was her grandmother; my mother telling her she had died and, to tell her father as she did not want to shock her daughter, my sister, in the morning. Alice felt frozen in her bed, but eventually awoke her father who looked in on my mother to find her still warm but dead. He called in the family doctor who lived nearby in the village, and the doctor confirmed that my mother had only just passed on and gave the approximate time of death as 2 a.m.

When Alice looked at her alarm clock in the morning it had stopped at 2 a.m.
