The multitude of plants and animals that now constitute our biosphere, share between them a total of about 1 million different genes.
These could have been acquired as a result of random mutation through the ages, but the range of variation and the speed with which evolutionary changes are often made, suggest another mechanism.
We seem to need, and to be provided with, substantial new sources of variation. New genes, like those of the latest kind of influenza, that come floating down like manna from heaven
