A description of the experience
St. Honoratus of Arles, the fifth-century Gaul, to his students on his death bed:
You see how fragile is the house we inhabit. Whatever rank we hold, death comes upon us; neither riches nor honour can help us escape from his necessity. Live in such wise that you fear not the last hour, and look upon death as a journey.
My dearly loved children, follow my advice, it is the only heritage your dying father and bishop can leave you.
Do not allow yourselves to be deceived by love of the world. Relinquish voluntarily with your hearts that which you must one day involuntarily relinquish.
