The Art of Dying – Drs Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick
Mum passed away in 2003. During the last few days before she died, she talked of her fears of being dead. She regretted having no real religious faith to help her to believe in some sort of existence after death. Much as people talk of being met by a loved one at death and wishing to be reunited, my mother said she had no faith in this.
During the last hours of her life, Mum appeared to be asleep. Throughout this time my brother and I were by her side. She moved only once, turning her head and looking at us (clearly conscious of our presence and position within the room) and said 'He's come.'
She then closed her eyes, turned her head to face in front of her and said, 'O my darling, I love you.' She never stirred again and passed away some six or seven hours later.
