Background

A description of the experience

The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself

It is the same with another of God's methods of instructing the soul, that by which He speaks to it without words, ….. He uses so celestial a language that it is difficult to explain it to mortals, however much one may wish to, unless the Lord Himself teaches us how.

He introduces into the innermost pars of the soul what He wants it to understand, presenting it not in pictures or in the form of words, but in the manner of this vision that I have described.

Consider carefully this way in which God reveals to the soul not only His wishes, but also great truths and mysteries. Often when He explains some vision that He has been pleased to grant me, the instruction comes in this way.

This, I think is the state with which the devil can least interfere, for reasons which I will set out - and if they are not good ones I must be under a delusion.
