Ruzbihan Baqli – The Unveiling of Secrets – The Diary of a Sufi Master [translated by Carl Ernst]
58. "Seek Me in the Station of Love"
I saw in one of my unveilings a time when I sat in meditation, hunting the birds of the angelic realm, which fly in the world of might, with the nets of recollecting God’s names [dhikr]. I was lifted up in the forms of actions and my will was to travel in eternity, but it was not possible for me to depart from the exterior of the actions.
I saw the Truth (glory be to him who is transcendent) in "the most beautiful form."
He dawned upon me suddenly from the hidden world, and I could not control myself, so that I sobbed and cried. Then this form approached, offered me hospitality and set me ablaze with increased longing.
It was as though he was scattering from his face white roses, and wearing pearl brocade. He hid from me, then he appeared to me, in a form more beautiful than the first. And I went until I was united with him.
He said to me in my conscience, "'Where are you going?"
I said, "To eternity without end and without beginning."
He said, 'And what do you want?"
I said, "I want my annihilation in the wrath of eternity, for I am not content with the vision of the cloak of divinity."
He said, "This is a long journey. But I will come with you and be your companion on the path."
So we went beyond the throne, and travelled on a journey to the hidden of the hidden.
First he disappeared from me, then he appeared to me after an hour with the quality of power, and there I was annihilated.
And he summoned me, saying, "Seek me in the station of love, for the world and everything in it are no match for the assaults of my glory."
Then he appeared to me in a form more beautiful than any other, and the sweetness of that witnessing remained with me, but he did not give my desire to me. So I remained in the station of censuring and complaining about him until the time of dawn.
