Redon was fascinated by the symbol of decapitation as an indicator of rebirth experiences and as a symbol of the need to block out sensory input o get spiritual experiences - a symbol in effect of sensory deprivation.
He drew and painted floating heads both during his Black periods and during his White periods as such the symbolism was a continual preoccupation.
The symbol is frequently combined with that of the flower
