Background

A description of the experience

David Scott Rogo - Leaving the Body: A Complete Guide to Astral Projection

Raymond Bayless … toyed with various pranayama techniques  for leaving the body, and he had some success on at least one occasion. One experiment he conducted in 1952 was particularly enlightening.

lt was late in the afternoon, and Raymond decided to try leaving the body through breathing exercises. He stretched out on his bed in the shavasnna position, with his arms at his sides. He then engaged in a practice akin to the great psychic breath, by rhythmically breathing in and out in a quick but deep fashion. At the same time, he mentally willed that he should leave the body and also visualized the Kundalini at the base of his spine.

He practiced for about an hour before quitting. Then he just rested and let his mind wander off into daydreams. His eyes were closed.

By this time, Bayless was not expecting to leave the body. But as he rested, he felt his body begin to sway violently from side to side. His first impression was that an earthquake had struck. No sooner had he thought of this than he felt himself falling back down to the bed. The experience was so dramatic that he was shocked by its intensity and realized that he had actually been floating above his body in an out-of-body state.

He feels, however, that it may have been his faith in the technique rather than the breathing itself that produced the incipient OBE.
