Reynaldo Hahn : Portraits de peintres d'après Proust - 2 Potter

Paulus Potter ( 20 November 1625 (baptised) – 17 January 1654 (buried)) was a Dutch painter who specialized in animals within landscapes, usually with a low vantage point.  Before Potter died of tuberculosis at the age of 28 he succeeded in producing about 100 paintings, working continuously.

His most famous painting not to be confused with his work "The Bull" is The Young Bull

A description of the experience

Potter

Sombre chagrin des ciels coutumièrement gris,
Plus tristes d’être bleus aux rares éclaircies
Et qui laissent alors sur les plaines transies
Filtrer les tièdes pleurs d’un soleil incompris ;

Potter, mélancolique humeur des plaines sombres
Qui s’étendent sans fin, sans joie et sans couleur ;

The sombre grief of skies customarily grey,
Sadder to be blue and with a rare cloud
which leaves on the shivering plains
the filter of the warm tears of an uncomprehending  sun;

Potter, melancholic mood of the dark plains
Which extend without end, joyless and colorless;
The trees, the hamlet spread no shadows,
The meager gardens are not in flower.

A farmer pulling buckets returns, and puny,
His mare resigned, worried and dreaming,
Anxious, thoughtful rearing its head,
Hume short of breath, the strong breath of the  wind.
