Background
A description of the experience
Olanzapine – Trade names Zyprexa , Zyprexa Zydis , Zalasta, Zolafren, Olzapin, Oferta, Zypadhera or in combination with fluoxetene as Symbax. As you can see the number of hallucinations caused by this drug is extremely high. Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic structurally similar to Clozapine, but is classified as a thienobenzodiazepine. Sales of Zyprexa in 2008 were $2.2B in the US alone, and $4.7B in total.
It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
It is a hugely complex drug, meaning that, like Clozapine, the effects will be largely unpredictable . The literature states “The mode of action of olanzapine's antipsychotic activity is unknown”. Olanzapine has a higher affinity for 5-HT2 serotonin receptors than D2 dopamine receptors. Other affinities are:
- dopamine D1: 31
- dopamine D2: 11
- serotonin 5-HT2A: 4
- serotonin 5-HT2C: 11
- muscarinic M1: 1.9
- adrenergic alpha1: 19
and also exhibits weak affinity for GABAA, BZD receptor site. It is clear, however, that amongst the list of side effects are some very well known antimuscarinic ones [I have not listed all the side effects, the list was too long]:
- dry mouth
- dizziness
- sedation
- constipation
- urinary retention
- impaired judgment, thinking, and motor skills
- impaired spatial orientation
- impaired responses to senses
- seizures
- trouble swallowing
- problems with keeping body temperature regulated
- Auditory Hallucinations

On EROWID, those who were ill call it a life saver. The mildest comment from someone who was not ill was that it had ‘no recreational value’.
