Case 71. - Dr. Gustave Geley, who was the first director of the International Metapsychic Institute of Paris, and the author of metapsychic works that became classics, had a personal experience of the supranormal faculty of animals and described it in his book De l'Inconscient au Conscient (From the Unconscious to the Conscious), page 192:
One night, as a doctor, I was looking after a young woman who was suffering from a devastating illness and was in agony. The family was with me, silent and grieving. The patient was complaining. It was one o'clock in the morning (death occurred at daybreak).
Suddenly, in the garden surrounding the house, howling [the death howl] was heard made by the house dog. It was a long, gloomy complaint, on a single note, first in a high tone, then decrescendo, until it slowly and very slowly faded out.
There was a silence of a few seconds and the howling resumed, identical and monotonous, infinitely sad. The patient had a glimmer of consciousness and looked at us anxiously. She understood.
The husband rushed down to silence the dog.
As he approached, the animal hid, and it was impossible, in the middle of night, to find him.
As soon as the husband came to the house, the dog started again and so it continued for more than an hour, until the dog was found and taken away.
