Case 70. - (Visual.) - From the Proceedings of the S.P.R., vol. V, page 302. - The story comes from Mrs. Welman:
There is a tradition in my family's maternal branch that, shortly before the death of one of its members, a large black dog appeared to either parent. One winter day in 1877, around dinner time, I was going to go downstairs. The house was lit up and, as I walked down a hallway to the stairs, I suddenly saw a big black dog walking in front of me without making a noise.
In this half darkness, I thought it was one of our sheepdogs, and I called out: Laddie! - but the dog didn't turn around and didn't seem to hear me.
I followed it. I had a vague feeling of unease, which turned into a deep astonishment, when, at the bottom of the stairs, I noticed that any trace of the dog disappeared in front of me, even though the doors were all closed. I didn't tell anyone, but I couldn't help but think about what had happened to me all the time.
Two or three days later, we received news from Ireland of the unexpected death of an aunt, my mother's sister, who had died in an accident.
