A description of the experience

Professor Ernesto Bozzano - The parapsychological manifestations of animals - 130 cases proving animal mediumistic abilities

I extract this case from the Annals of Psychic Sciences, 1916, p. 149. It is recorded in a private letter that Mrs. Esperanza Payker sent from Zurich on December 7, 1916 to one of her friends, and relates to the death in war of a brother of the lady in question. This is the essential part of the story:

You're asking me about Richard.

He died, the unfortunate one, fighting against the Russians! He, the cosmopolitan, who wanted to see in every man a brother!...

At the moment of his death there occurred a fact that can only interest you. You remember Kacuy, Richard's dog. Well, at 7:00 p. m. on August 13, he was asleep at my feet. Suddenly he rises, runs towards the door, wagging his tail, barking joyfully and jumping, as if it was about to greet a known person.

Then suddenly, he withdrew in horror, howling lamentably, moaned, trembled, came back to bed at my feet, without ceasing to complain all the night long.

The next day, it left the house; it was never seen again. However, the strange manifestation of the dog coincided exactly with the time when Richard fell seriously wounded.

The dog's disappearance took place at the time of death....
