Background

Diane sortant du bain

François BOUCHER; Paris, 1703 - Paris, 1770
The goddess Diana rests after the hunt, served by a nymph for her ritual toilet. Under the mythological cover of the subject, this picture is an anthem to the female body. The refinement of the drawing, the radiant flesh, the moëlleuse touch and the luminous colour attest to the maturity of the artist

Today I’ve been hunting, yes, out hunting men
It’s something I’m fond of – now and again
The thrill of the chase, the pursuit of good game
And the challenge of fighting him when he’s not tame

The spirited active ones they’re the best sport
I have chased some for hours and still they’ve been caught
For no man I’ve pursued has ever got away
I’ve trapped and devoured them all in just a day

How my heart pounds as I see the men run
Sometimes I pursue them to tire them, for fun
When cornered how thrilling to see them fight back
But’s no use against me, all end up on their back

And trembling, exhausted they all tend to succumb
And I mount them and ride them until they have come
Then I leave them all spent on the soft forest floor
Until they’ve recovered and then I take more

And each time I take them more life slips away
And they die broken hearted (or so I’ve heard say)
Drained of all seed, as I ride from above
I’m Diana, the hunter, hunting for love
