The Buddha descends from the Trayastrimsa heaven by a stairway to ‘tread the human path’; from the top of the stairway all the Brahmalokas are visible above and the depths of hell below, for it is a true axis mundi set at the ‘Centre of the Universe’. This miraculous stairway is depicted in the reliefs at Bharhut and Sanchi and in Tibetan Buddhist painting it also gives human beings access to heaven
