Isabella Tree – Sliced Iguana

The hummingbird was a magical, sacred creature in the pre-Cortesian world.  Nahua civilisations believed that warriors who died in war, in honour of the Sun god, were reincarnated as hummingbirds and it was these hummingbirds that pulled the chariot of the Sun out of the world of darkness every day, across the sky so he could light up the earth.  Women who died in childbirth, were honoured by reincarnation as hummingbirds.
