Background

A description of the experience

From Matter to Spirit – The Result of Ten Years Experience in Spirit Manifestation – Sophia Elizabeth De Morgan

The narrator is a woman without education who had not heard of the various modalities according to the spiritual visions occurring among the "sensitive", having attended the last moments of a child, she thus narrates her impressions:

I was attending to a sick child with its mother. The child was 2.5 years old and had had convulsions that had kept him in bed for three or four days. The mother had put her hand under the child's head, and I assisted her on the other side of the bed. In a small fireplace, in front of me and on the side where the mother was, a roaring fire was burning. Suddenly I saw the flame darken because of an obscurity that came between me and the little fireplace, and that something was constantly moving forward and backward. I asked the mother to observe the strange phenomenon, but she replied that she could see nothing.

In the meantime the child's convulsions had stopped, and he fell inanimate in his crib and remained so until, at about ten o'clock, he had died. I realized that the fire was somehow going out, an hour before the child died, and the phenomenon continued until he breathed his last breath. From that moment on, I saw the clear and bright flame again.
