Background
A description of the experience
Li Ch’ung [loosely translated]
All those years ago, we felt the same pleasure
So deeply were we involved
I sensed your desire
You guessed my heart.
Four serene years went by
Harmonious as lute and harp
But good luck did not keep me company and I had to go.
We became as distant as Antares and Orion
I went far to the west
You stayed far to the east
Heavy, heavy thoughts, how to bear them?
My eyes carried the charm of your fair image
My ears held the beauty of your clear voice
Through the day endless memories surged
Far into the night I sighed in lonely grief
When you said that we could meet again
And that we need no longer be apart, tears filled my head
Honour me with your heart for all time
One look from you is worth more to me than all the gold in the universe
