Background

A description of the experience

As described in Illustrations Of The Influence Of The Mind Upon The Body In Health And Disease, Designed To Elucidate The Action Of The Imagination - Daniel Hack Tuke, M.D., M.R.C.P.,

CHAPTER XVI. INFLUENCE OF MENTAL STATES UPON DISORDERS OF SENSATION, MOTION, AND THE ORGANIC FUNCTIONS.
SECTION II.— Influence of Mental States upon Disorders involving Excessive or Defective Action of the Voluntary Muscles.

Epilepsy. — Sweetser cites from the "Medical and Surgical Journal," vol. xviii, the case of a "lady in the prime of life, of robust health, who was for four years afflicted with epilepsy in a violent degree, the paroxysms returning three or four times a week, continuing for some hours, and leaving the patient in a state of stupor. A variety of medicines had been tried in vain, and the case was considered hopeless, when, on receiving a dreadful mental shock, by the circumstance of her daughter being accidentally burnt to death, the disease entirely and finally left her" (Mental Hygiene. By Dr. Sweetser. 1844, p. 28.)
