I had this experience under an anaesthetic. I seemed to be aware of myself, not dreaming, but observing; the sensation when I lost connection with material things was delightful. I can only say that it made me look forward to the moment of death with a sense of pleasant anticipation. I understand why Archbishop Tait, when dying, said, 'I did not know that dying was so pleasant.'"
