The rutabaga or swede (from Swedish turnip), yellow turnip, or neep (Brassica napobrassica, or Brassica napus var. napobrassica, or Brassica napus subsp. rapifera) is a root vegetable commonly grown in temperate climates.
The word turnip is an old compound of tur- as in turned/rounded [as on a lathe] and neep, which refers to swedes. In essence, a turnip is a round swede - swedes being more oval in shape!
In the north of England and Scotland, the word neeps also describes a vegetable dish served in Scotland with haggis, using mashed swede and carrot with a lot of butter added.
Swedes can be roasted, boiled and mashed, or even pureed. They go extremely well in winter stews and hotpots along with carrots. The leaves can be eaten as a leaf vegetable, although sometimes they can be a bit strong in taste.Being extremely hardy the are widely grown.
The roots and tops are also used as winter feed for livestock, when they may be fed directly, or by allowing the animals to forage the plants in the field.
