Suppression

Squash the big I am

Category: Actions

Type

Voluntary

Introduction and description

One of the  biggest blocks to spiritual experience is the ego, Ahaṃkāra , for example, is a Sanskrit term that is related to egoism - that is, the identification or attachment to one's ego.  The Big I am.  It is another word for egotistical which means "excessively conceited or absorbed in oneself; self-centred". as in
"he's selfish, egotistical, and arrogant"

The Personality is different and the definition is provided via the link. The Personality is the you that was created to achieve your destiny.  But the Ego smacks of self importance, it is the self important you, the one who thinks he cannot possibly be wrong, or the one who won't forgive or seek forgiveness, who lords it over others, who bullies or manipulates - the control freak

One total block on any form of ecstasy or union with your Higher spirit is the ego.  Thus this activity is absolutely key to achieving both suppression based experiences and also progress on the Spiritual path.

Interestingly enough, there are a number of Overload techniques that also squash the ego – Humiliation,  along with submissive behaviour but these are for people with very big egos.

Every technique I describe in this section which helps with squashing the ego has to be practised on a permanent basis.  This is a lifestyle approach not an occasional ‘once every so often’ activity.

This is because you can have no impact on the ego unless the pressure is always on – you are teaching yourself on a permanent basis and this simply does not work unless you keep the pressure on all the time – or as the Americans would say ‘24/7’ – although actually it is more like 12/7 because it happens automatically when you are asleep – which is why you go unconscious – your ego goes to sleep.

Background

Many religions have incorporated this technique, and the observations I have included show it is a fundamental tenet of Sikhism, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, and the Hindu religion.  The idea is also present within many of the martial arts communities, indigenous cultures and is prominent in the I Ching.

In Buddhism it is taught as an ongoing practise, as it is in Christianity, Sufism, Sikhism, the Hindu religion and so on.  In Amish thought and practice, for example, the concept of Gelassenheit is a manifestation of humility of spirit.

So what we are doing here is well known and has proved its worth.

Method

All the following are techniques which need to be kept up on a permanent basis, don’t be put off by the names, read the description.  This is not some fanatical religious conversion site [if it was, chocolate and children, dogs and love and oysters would figure more prominently because these I worship]  – all these are specifically designed to help you with ego bashing:

  • Humility -  no not Uriah Heap style humility but doing things like praising others, treating everyone equally and admitting your mistakes
  • Generosity  - is a companion technique to Charity.  Whilst with charity you give of yourself, with generosity you do give money.  You do not necessarily give money away willy nilly.  Instead you spend your money on others to give them happiness and to help them
  • Avoiding conflict - what one is trying to do is avoid any conflict by not responding to aggression or provocation.  It can perhaps best be summarised by the expression  ‘turn the other cheek’
  • Follow don’t lead – this requires you to learn how to give in to someone else when they tell you to do something.  You serve and do not question.  You learn how to follow as opposed to lead. BUT take care.  You DON’T  follow any old guru or leader.  It is often safer and more effective if you give in to those you love and who love you, like your dog or the goldfish or your Mum.  People who have a vested interest in your safety and well being and who sink with your ship if they let you down.
  • Minding your own business – this is for control freaks, people who can’t resist giving advice to others and ‘helping them’ by telling what they should be doing. And for those always directing other people’s lives.  If someone comes to you with tales of woe, it means you sympathise but don’t try to solve the problem, you let them solve it by talking it through with you.  And you don’t order people about.
  • Patience- The Composer always gives us what we need at the time and for many many months or even years we may never appear to get what we expect [or want], because we need something else.  If we haven’t cottoned on to why we need these other things and ignore them, they will just keep on coming in other formats.  When nothing appears to be happening, you just need faith and patience.
  • Serving others - The old fashioned name for this technique is ‘charity’ but this term has become so abused and misused in its meaning that I have picked a name which is more representative of what we are trying to do.  Charity does not mean giving money to charity, it means giving yourself.  It means service to others, constant service.  Whatever you want to do is replaced by doing what others need – as long as what others want harms and hurts no one or no thing.  You do not seek reward, you do not seek for thanks, you do it as an act of love.

How it works

It may be helpful if you have open the Model of the Mind whilst reading this and have been through the generic description of How spiritual experience works.

This activity works via direct Suppression of the ego and Personality.  It may initially trigger a few Emotions, but in the end, it does not work via the overload of the Emotions, but simply by the training of the ego to give in.  Once the Personality has given up its tight hold on the Will, the Composer can take over.  By stilling the Personality, one of the drivers to the Will – in fact the major driver to the Will is removed.  You still the chattering Will and by stilling the chattering Will, the Composer can take over.

Advantages

  • Hugely, hugely effective – the road to nirvana
  • Free and legal
  • Far more pleasurable than letting the ego have free rein
  • Even little steps give peace and contentment

Observations

One very good example of a man who practised this the whole of his life was Michael Faraday.  It worked for Jesus and his disciples  It is taught by numerous psychotherapy schools.  It worked for the writers and followers of the I Ching, including Confucius, it worked for the Buddha, it worked for followers of Shinto, it worked [and works], for numerous Indigenous cultures, it works for the followers of Sikhism, Hinduism and Sufism.  Gurdjieff and PD Ouspensky used it in their Fourth Way, numerous gurus and masters have employed it………..
