Film directors and screenwriters
“Son, are you happy?
I don't mean to pry,
but do you dream of Heaven?
Have you ever wanted to die?”
Timothy Walter "Tim" Burton (born August 25, 1958) is an American film director, film producer, writer, poet, and stop motion artist.
“He is known for his dark, gothic, macabre and quirky horror and fantasy films such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie, and for blockbusters such as Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Batman, its first sequel Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland”.
Burton is known for using recurring collaborators on his works; among them are Johnny Depp, who has become a close friend of Burton since their first film together; musician Danny Elfman, who has composed scores for all but two of the films Burton has directed; and actress — as well as his domestic partner — Helena Bonham Carter. He also wrote and illustrated the poetry book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories, published in 1997, and a compilation of his drawings, sketches and other artwork, entitled The Art of Tim Burton, was released in 2009.
Burton has directed 16 films and produced 12 as of 2012.
Littered all over the Internet are also statements that Tim Burton is bipolar. And here we have to pause because Tim Burton is an example of a highly creative man, a genius of film, unafraid to break boundaries with a dark and a light side, who fits no pattern that current society can tag him with. Is he bipolar? Who knows, who cares. Through whatever quirk of brain configuration he has, he has achieved a level of creativity and weirdness quite unparalleled in the film world.
I have given him the label manic depressive so you read this and take stock, because if he had been a less strong personality he might have been 'treated' like a number of other unfortunates on this site with pharmaceuticals and nothing of what we enjoy now in his work would have been produced.
Tim Burton is wise well beyond those who label him. I will provide you with some quotes that I hope make you take stock a little more............
“I have a problem when people say something's real or not real, or normal or abnormal. The meaning of those words for me is very personal and subjective. I've always been confused and never had a clearcut understanding of the meaning of those kinds of words.”
“When you don’t have many friends and you don’t have a social life you’re kind of left looking at things, not doing things. There’s a weird freedom in not having people treat you like you’re part of society or where you have to fulfill social relationships.”
“Visions are worth fighting for. Why spend your life making someone else's dreams?”
“One person's craziness is another person's reality.”
