The Hearing Voices Network

Category: Website

The HVN  - The Hearing Voices Network - are committed to helping people who hear voices - auditory hallucinations.

They set up the website and organisation, having realised that people need support, thus their motives are much the same as ours in setting up our site. They also noticed that the medical community were often not a great deal of help. As their site says:

Psychiatry refers to hearing voices as ‘auditory hallucinations’ but our research shows that there are reasons for hearing voices. Many people begin to hear voices as a result of extreme stress, for example, or trauma.

As you will be able to see from our site, these are but two of the activities that can produce voices, and there is a page where thousands of auditory hallucinations can be referenced.  Pharmaceuticals are perhaps the biggest contributor.  If you are interested this LINK takes you to the eHealthme website and a list of the pharmaceuticals reported to have caused auditory hallucinations.

Aims of HVN

The HVN website provides information, support and understanding to people who hear voices and those who support them. The aims of the network are:

  • To raise awareness of voice hearing, visions, tactile sensations and other sensory experiences

  • To give men women and children who have these experiences an opportunity to talk freely about this together

  • To support anyone with these experiences seeking to understand, learn and grow from them in their own way

Activities

They try to achieve these aims through the following activities:

  • Promoting, developing and supporting self-help groups

  • Organising and delivering training sessions for health workers and the general public

  • Making available a telephone line that gives information and help to people who experience hearing voices, seeing visions and tactile sensations

  • Giving men, women and children who have these experiences an opportunity to talk freely about them

  • Producing four newsletters a year

Once admired in the religious, now treated as a psychiatric
condition!
