Some science behind the scenes
Insects
Bill Bryson
The number of species of insects runs from 750,000 to 950,000 known species – that is known and classified to science. There are an estimated 400,000 beetles.
Terry Irwin of the Smithsonian Institute, however, has estimated a figure of 30 million species of insects for the entire planet, others using the same sampling data have come up with figures of 13 million, 80 million or a 100 million insect types.
