Acne is a skin condition marked by skin eruptions, for example, red pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, rashes, and large bumps. It is a common human skin disease, characterized by areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), nodules (large papules), pimples, and possibly scarring.

A page has been provided that covers acne and the causes. The principal causes are other pharmaceuticals, along with contributions from stress, as well as parasites and diet.

Types of treatment

Antibiotics - One pharmaceutical class used to treat the symptoms of acne are the antibiotics. Given the causes of acne, this may not be a very helpful use of these drugs and the antibiotics used have included the following:

Amoxycillin
Ampicillin Trihydrate
Azithromycin
Cefadroxil (formerly trademarked as Duricef)
Cefuroxime trade name Zinnat
Cephalexin or Keflex
Clindamycin Hydrochloride/ Clindamycin Phosphate
Doxycycline trade name Doryx, Oracea, Vibramycin and Monodox
Erythromycin
Minocycline trade names Minocin and Solodyn
Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride brand name Terramycin
Sulfamethoxazole (abbreviated SMZ or SMX)
Tetracycline brand names Sumycin, Tetracyn, Lymecycline, and Panmycin
Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX), also known as co-trimoxazole, Bactrim and Bactrim DS, and Septra among other names

More details on antibiotics and the number of hallucinations and deaths caused by them can be found by following this LINK. It is not possible on the eHealthme site to separate out the different uses to which the antibiotic was being used when the death or hallucination occurred, as such it is not meaningful to put figures here, as they may have been prescribed for other symptoms.

Contraceptive pill – where the cause appears to be hormonal and the patient is female, another treatment is to place the person on ‘the pill’. We have a separate section on contraceptives. Junel and Loestrin have been used in this context, as has Yaz.

Topical gels - A number of these products are topical gels and their record for producing hallucinations is almost non existent, as should be expected. Where hallucinations have been caused it is something of a mystery why. In some cases no concurrent medication was being used.

There is a clue with the gels, as in the one death caused by Tazorac where the person was on no other medication, the person concerned was coming up to 60 implying that a pathogen was attacking her and causing the eruptions at the same time. Skin problems are often an indicator of lymph system problems.

Where other drugs are being used, it is more than likely – given the drugs – that they are the cause not the gel. Differin for example, was being used in the cases on eHealthme with

Wellbutrin xl (3 people, 60.00%)
Vitamin a (3 people, 60.00%)
Tetracycline (3 people, 60.00%)
Ibuprofen (1 people, 20.00%)
Skelaxin (1 people, 20.00%)

Tretinoin is available as a cream or gel and it appears to have also caused deaths! Again, however, the co-used drugs for these people were :

Idarubicin hcl (5 people, 45.45%)
Mercaptopurine (4 people, 36.36%)
Mitoxantrone (4 people, 36.36%)
Methotrexate (3 people, 27.27%)
Etoposide (2 people, 18.18%)

Leading one to suspect that it was what was being ingested that was the problem.

Accutane – The main pharmaceutical, which is taken orally as opposed to being used as a gel, and whose main purpose is to treat acne, is Isotretinoin, also known as 13-cis retinoic acid and first marketed as Accutane. It is also used to treat cystic acne. It has numerous names, which makes unravelling the number of hallucinations and deaths somewhat problematical.

Side-effects

Taking Accutane first, which is ingested, and using the results from eHealthme we find that the most common Accutane side effects are:

Now taking a drug like Tazorac, a topical medicine, and again using the results from eHealthme we find that the most common Tazorac side effects are:

Itching in Tazorac (43 reports)
Pain in Tazorac (39 reports)
Rashes in Tazorac (38 reports)
Rash Erythematous in Tazorac (33 reports)
Drug Ineffective in Tazorac (29 reports)

Accutane and all its trade names

On Aug, 22, 2015: 27,825 people reported to have side effects when taking Accutane. Among them, 124 people (0.45%) have Death
On Aug, 29, 2015: 4,292 people reported to have side effects when taking Amnesteem. Among them, 25 people (0.58%) have Death
On Aug, 18, 2015: 4,062 people reported to have side effects when taking Claravis. Among them, 13 people (0.32%) have Death
On Sep, 3, 2015: 7,099 people reported to have side effects when taking Sotret. Among them, 75 people (1.06%) have Death

Tretinoin and its brand names

On Aug, 13, 2015: 1,266 people reported to have side effects when taking Tretinoin. Among them, 11 people (0.87%) have Death
On Sep, 3, 2015: 1,515 people reported to have side effects when taking Renova. Among them, 3 people (0.20%) have Death

Tazorac - On Aug, 31, 2015: 468 people reported to have side effects when taking Tazorac. Among them, 1 people (0.21%) has Death

Spironolactone and its trade names

On Aug, 24, 2015: 25,396 people reported to have side effects when taking Spironolactone. Among them, 753 people (2.97%) have Death
On Aug, 29, 2015: 76 people reported to have side effects when taking Spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide. Among them, 3 people (3.95%) have Death
On Sep, 3, 2015: 19,966 people reported to have side effects when taking Aldactone. Among them, 594 people (2.98%) have Death

When we look at these figures we need to remember that the person went to their doctor with spots.

Observations

The following table shows the number of hallucinations experienced for each drug, recorded on the eHealthme website, which is compiled from the Adverse Drug reports submitted by doctors to the FDA and SEDA.
