Introduction and description
Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs. Peritonitis may be localised or generalised, and may result from infection (often due to rupture of a hollow organ as may occur in abdominal trauma or appendicitis) or from a non-infectious process.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of peritonitis are
- acute abdominal pain, abdominal tenderness, and abdominal 'guarding', which are exacerbated by moving the peritoneum, e.g., coughing
- Fever
- Sinus tachycardia
- Development of ileus paralyticus (i.e., intestinal paralysis), which also causes nausea, vomiting and bloating.
Causes
One of the main causes is Appendicitis, but any perforation of the gastrointestinal tract also has the same effect.
- Bacterial infection - can cause peritonitis as can certain
- Viral infections
- Parasites - can also cause the same problems
Cysts [often caused by the above] and other damaged organs leaking fluids can also be a cause.

Treatment
Find the cause and treat this.
How it works
