Practical Astral projection - Yram

As [I had] not developed the habit of gliding in the air like a bird, I first of all began by making the movements of swimming. It was therefore by pretending to swim that I first travelled in space.

Little by little my skill improved. Instead of swimming in the usual way, using the breast-stroke, I began to move along with a sort of side-stroke. After that I learnt to turn over on my back and float, pushing with my feet only. Finally, I would travel horizontally, with my hands clasped together and arms stretched out as if to cut through the ether which lay before me, impelled simply by a wish.

When travelling above a material surface, or an ethereal surface which takes on a material shape, the impression of being surrounded by a great void is far less strong. It will, in such cases, be found quite a simple gesture to glide standing up, without the help of any gesture.

The fear of empty space which is experienced at the beginning is due to the formidable sense of reality with which this conscious projection strikes one. During a dream one would feel no fear. Whilst dreaming such a feat would seem quite natural. But here, though, in full possession of the ordinary consciousness, which has been transferred from the physical envelope to the astral double, there is undoubtedly ground for hesitation.
