A description of the experience

Taupo Times 8th June 1978

An active 'mystery cloud' appeared over Motutaiko Island, New Zealand on 4th June 1978.  Mrs Christine Dudley, her husband and family watched its antics for an hour as the black cloud swooped around Lake Taupo.  She said it moved at speed, continually changing shape and sometimes dipping down to touch the water surface before shooting up again.  The cloud was still visible some time after sunset.  'It was a little frightening' said Mrs Dudley
