Background

Wy or Hy-Brazil is a ‘phantom’ island which features in many Irish myths. It was said to be cloaked in mist, except for one day each seven years, when it became visible but could still not be reached. It was described as being circular, with a central river running east-west across its diameter.

The name Hy-Brazil is thought to come from the Irish Uí Breasail meaning island of the "descendants or clan of Breasal", one of the ancient clans of northeastern Ireland. In other words this island is the spiritual resting place of the souls in the Breasal clan.

Like many an allegorical island, some people both claimed to have seen it and even visited it. For a while it was even put on maps! Despite the failure of attempts to find it, it appeared regularly on maps lying south west of Galway Bay from 1325 until 1865, by which time it was called Brazil Rock.

There are some who believe it to be the remains of Atlantis

A description of the experience

Paul Devereux – Earth Mysteries

The mythical island of Wy Brasil supposedly off the west coast of Ireland was shown on Irish naval charts until 1830. The magical island was considered to be visible from the Arran islands in Galway bay every 7 years. One fellow claimed to have seen it in 1872.
