Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

According to some observers, everything has a sound, even things which in normal life don’t have a ‘sound’ can have a sound when you are having a vision

A description of the experience

Walt Whitman – Leaves of Grass

My voice goes after what my eyes cannot reach
With the twirl of my tongue I encompass worlds and volumes of worlds
Speech is the twin of vision – it is unequal to measure itself
It says sarcastically, Walt, you understand enough – why don’t you let it out then?
I think I will do nothing for a long time but listen
And accrue what I hear into myself – and let sounds contribute towards me
I hear the bravura of birds
The bustle of the growing wheat
Gossip of flames
Clack of sticks cooking meals

-

I hear the violincello of man’s heart complain
And hear the keyed cornet or else the echo of sunset

The source of the experience

Whitman, Walt
