A description of the experience
William Seabrook – Magic island
I want to quote as an example of extraordinary candor a conversation with Ti Cousin, the famous Leogane papaloi. He said to me:
"There are many things my father [who was one of the great hougans of the past generation] could do which I cannot do.
He could make thunder. He left me all his thunder stones. You saw them there on the altar; there are no finer in Haiti.
He instructed me throughout his lifetime. I have all the secret words. I do it exactly as he did, and I have never been able to make anything happen.
He was able to change the course of storms.
I have seen him drive them back across this mountain and into the sea. I have succeeded in controlling them a little only a few times.
Usually I fail, but in the matter of making certain ouangas I am stronger than he was.
