Some sorts of stones seem to have a capacity for storing and releasing energy. It demands attention, carries echoes and triggers memories, in ways that make individual pieces sacred and give large and more formal arrangements such a strong spirit of place. Standing stones, alignments, circles, cairns and tombs decorate earth’s surface like acupuncture points on an ancient chart. Each was once a focal point for pilgrimage and devotion and something of this ritual history seems to cling to the most potent of them, giving even casual visitors a sense of something special
