Poems of Tulsidas - translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
Who aside from you, King Ram,
is my true patron!
No one.
I've thought it out, and will tell it
to all, including you, my master.
If anyone knows anyone more special than you,
let him lay it on the line.
Friends who are formed of body and soul
are stitchwork badly done,
Or, as I think of it, they are like the false fruit
in the heart of a banana tree; or cheap beads
That glisten only when jewels and gold
are placed on either side.
This letter of petition from someone lowly-
Father, please read it;
And what Tulsi has written
from his heart-take it, correct it
By your good nature, and place it
before the divine court.
