Poems of Tulsidas - translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
The fire of my stomach has forced me
To grasp at the scraps of any caste-
My caste, high caste, low caste-
and this in full public display.
I have done evil as if it were truth,
In thought and word and action-
I know they call me "servant of Ram,"
but I'm treacherous even so.
Yet the force of the name of Ram is such,
The splendor of his feet so fine,
That the world has counted this Tulsi
as great as some great sage.
Such a surprise. Pathetic are those
Who see this and hear of this
And do not love the feet of Ram.
Such fools!
