Background

A description of the experience

This is from an article "Transcendental Music” by James Doughty which was published in the English journal Light (September, 1945).

When a child of six or seven, or possibly later, I was much alone, amusing myself in a very large garden, and amongst trees and shrubberies. I have enjoyed being alone with nature where it seems one can feel the nearness of the Divine. It seemed no surprise, at this age, that I contacted very lovely music. I just stood still and-absorbed it, and it made such a deep and lasting impression that I have never lost its perfect satisfaction. Depending upon no notes, it filled my being with harmony and joy. The music I experienced was not exactly heard, it was perceived, and seemed four-dimensional, solid, filling my being.
