A description of the experience
Korea has known masked dancing since early times. The poem "The Mask” by the Silla scholar Ch'oe Ch'iwon (857-?) not only testifies to the existence of mask-dances, but also shows that this dancing had a magic, ritual function.

The Mask - Ch'oe Ch'iwon
What man is this with the golden colored whip?
In his hand he holds the pearl whip
to exorcise the ghostly spirit.
Walking quickly, then running slowly
he performs an elegant dance,
Which faintly resembles the Phoenix Dance and the spring
[of the golden age] of [Emperor] Yao.
