Background
A description of the experience
POEMS OF SURDAS translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
Lord of Braj, the memory of my passion remains:
How stubbornly I acted, how silent and hurt
as I played with you so happily-we two.
You saw you were lost, but your penitence I spurned
as you laughed and touched your hand to my feet.
Then you feigned sleep. You turned your face away.
You curled up and covered your face with your shawl.
But love's a restless thing. You couldn't stay away
when you saw the Night was passing fruitlessly-
That great long night. And then
I found that it had cheated me of you,
Sur's Syam, as I recalled it all at Dawn.
