One day I found myself at the bedside of a dying man with a friend I knew who had a particular sensitivity for psychic visions. As the dying man's breathing turned into a rattle, I saw a white cloud coming out of his body and stopping two or three inches away. I noticed that my friend was also carefully observing the fact. Her eyes, from which a strange light always shone when she perceived things invisible to others, had at one point detached themselves from the silent contemplation of the dying man to fix themselves higher, towards the head of the bed. Then her eyes went lower, and she was caught staring into the void with extreme attention for more than a minute. I watched her in an attitude of questioning, but she kept quiet.
She explained to me some time later: "I saw a white cloud appear from the blankets, something that has already been observed in other circumstances, when my attention was drawn to the head of the bed where a small cloud of 3 or 4 feet high condensed in the form of a column, from which emanated a luminosity intermediate between the sunlight and the moonlight. Within this column, a greater luminosity could be discerned, which became more and more brilliant in the centre, while from the centre to the circumference the whole thing appeared animated by a vertiginous movement. I again saw the phenomenon when the patient breathed his last breath. Then this column seemed to rise and disappear."
