Sellers, Peter – Playing with Ouija boards in Ireland
Type of Spiritual Experience
Peter lived with Miranda in Ireland as a tax exile. He was bored stiff so Lord Snowden, Spike Milligan and even Brother Cornelius used to go and visit him
A description of the experience
Peter Sellers – Alexander Walker
‘We all used to eat more than was good for us’ said Penny Heath-Brown. 'Supper would be at 10 p.m., so as to make the night seem shorter. We'd have Irish friends and neighbours in, like Edna O'Brien, Kevin McClory, the film producer, or Siobhan McKenna. We'd run movies, in particular The Producers, which never failed to put Peter in a good mood.
After supper, he'd get out his ukulele and do his George Formby act for us. He was very, very proud of his father for teaching him how to play it, particularly one tricky, three-stroke movement. When he did it and we all broke into applause, his dear old face would beam with pleasure. He’d be like a child.
Other nights we'd play with the ouija board, receiving spirit messages, we supposed,, and would then spend hours - you know these Irish telephone exchanges- ringing round the world to confirm with friends what the board had told us.'
