A description of the experience

The Eye of the Wind – Sir Peter Scott

One late summer's day, walking up the river along the edge of a hay field, I almost stumbled over a small reddish animal curled up in the tall grass.

It was a day-old Roe Deer fawn, and of all the animals I have ever seen I think it was the most appealing.

He was tiny, with long coltish legs, unafraid eyes, a bulging forehead and huge expressive ears. He was deep russet and handsomely marked with sharp white spots in a row down either side of his back and spreading down his sides and flanks. He was almost too beautiful to be true.

He seemed to be entirely without fear and lay confidently in my arms; he sucked my little finger, he stood quietly while we photographed him and was finally happy to be left in his original nest.

His was a perfection that suited the perfection of our valley on that sunny morning
