Ruzbihan Baqli – The Unveiling of Secrets – The Diary of a Sufi Master [translated by Carl Ernst]
43. At the Tomb of Abu Muslim
When I left Abun, I went to the tomb of Shaykh Abu Muslim [al-Faris] to apologise for my bad manners.
As I approached his grave, I did not find sensitivity in my heart, and I was worried about that.
When I saw the tomb of the shaykh, I began to feel ecstasy, my heart became sensitive, and I started to weep profusely.
Then I turned, and I saw the masters of Abu Yazid among the grandsons of the master. I departed raving, and took to the road. A voice called to me in my heart saying
“A near punishment should seize you” [Qur’ran 7:73].
The voice filled me with fear, and I was afraid that calamity would befall me. So we travelled that day until we reached al-Sanjat and stayed in the lodge of Hanyan, spending the night there.
That message descended on my heart repeatedly, until I performed sunset prayers. My heart was agitated and my conscience simmered.
